I recently had the pleasure of discovering a talented Jacksonville band, From Out Of The Sky. They appeared on my radar exactly like their name suggests, out of nowhere. I didn’t see them live, and I wasn’t referred to them by some friend in the music scene. Rather, I was randomly drawn to their Myspace page while browsing the music directory.
Since then, I have consistently listened to their ever changing songs on Myspace and have developed an anticipatory rash as I await their full album and performance at the Shamrock on April 1. Each of the band’s songs is extremely well crafted and executed, with tasteful orchestrations and solid harmonies.
In order to enlighten Gainesville on who this band actually is, I bounced some questions off of Chris Estes, the creative force of From Out of the Sky, with the hope of bringing this information to the Gainesville community. This is what he had to say:
Eric: I hear shades of Brian Wilson in your voice, my wife hears late Freddie Mercury. Those are two pretty big comparisons, but when you listen to the harmonies and melodies, they can't be ignored. I also hear George Harrison in the guitar work, especially the solo on “The Hard Way.” Who are your influences and what do you think you sound like?
Chris: As for how it sounds, well It's a mish-mash of various indie stylings, like Magnetic Fields, Flaming Lips, GBV, and yes a little Brian Wilson thrown in for good measure (Smile was my favorite record last year). I'm glad you noticed the guitar solo in the hard way! Yes it does sound alot like George Harrison. He is one of my favorite slide guitar players. I like alot of old country-blues guitarists as well. Guys like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Robert Johnson, Lightning Hopkins, & Blind Willie Johnson. These are some of the dudes I listen to on a regular basis.
Eric: What is the meaning behind the band name?
Chris: The name was going to be "From Out Of My Head", but I changed that because I wanted something to reflect a band situation.
Eric: I noticed when I first found you that you were the only one listed as a band member, how long has the current lineup been playing together and are they the ones who worked on your recordings?
Chris: I wrote and recorded most of these songs myself, here at home on my computer. I had some help on a few instruments like violin and a few drum tracks.
After I recorded the album, my next task was to form a band to play these songs. So I found some capable and talented musicians: Sherry Chung plays keys, Jon Morrison plays drums, Rebecca Zapen plays violin, and Mike Gottuso plays bass. I play the guitar and sing the songs. The shows we have played around town have been successful, and we are looking forward to comin' to your town.
Eric: What is your musical background, previous projects, what do you do for a living?
Chris: The [current] album was made after my old band Quiet Ninjas disbanded. We were a nice little indie band here in Jax, and we had a modest following. But after two albums, we were done. I live here in Riverside, Jacksonville. I teach kids how to play drums and guitar and banjo three days a week. I also work at Warehouse recording studio. We record anything and everything around town. It's a great job. I also have a small recording set-up at home, and I get some business there too.
Eric: "MBV, Words not spoken, the simple life, and the hard way" are all great songs. I think they can contend with the best of them out there. What are these songs about, and are you solely responsible for them?
Chris: I have been into politics for some time, and I followed the elections very closely. This is what MBV is all about. Although the name reflects one of my favorite bands because I thought it sounded like one of their songs.
A careful life is about how it's never to late to do something wonderful with your life, even if you've wasted it so far.
Words Not Spoken, and The Hard Way are relationship type songs, and they don't really go that deep.
Eric: What are you trying to do with your music? Given today's music business, it's not as feasible for bands to be set on getting signed. What are your realistic goals and what is the farthest you would want to go with this?
Chris: I have no illusions of grandeur, but I would like to get this album out to more people. Perhaps a small label could help?
Eric: If you could see/be a part of one fantasy concert, who would open and who would headline (living or dead musicians).
Chris: Well it would be great if we opened for the Doors and Jimi Hendrix, with Phil Spector running the sound. And when Jim Morrison whips his dick out, Phil would pull out his revolver and shoot it off!
And that's my fantasy concert.
From Out of The Sky will be performing on April 1st at the Shamrock with Fortune Cookies, Morningbell, and Team Mascot.
