Happy New Years from all of us here at Crescendo Sound Studios ... we
hope everyone had a safe holiday season and are looking forward to a
great 2008.
Last year was hectic for us with our grand opening in August, and then
we finished the year staying quite busy with a few projects. The Draft
(Epitaph Records/No Idea Records) came in the put the final touches on a
two song 7" they released on No Idea. The Classic Struggle
(Ironclad/Metal Blade Records) spent a busy 2 and half weeks tracking
and mixing 10 songs for their upcoming full-length. The AKA's
(Metropolis Records) stopped by for a few days while they were on tour to
do some overdubs on their upcoming release, which was produced by
Alex Newport (Sepultura/Mars Volta/Samiam). We mixed a few songs for
Off With Their Heads for one of their upcoming No Idea Records releases.
Gainesville, Florida's Dear And Glorious Physician recorded 10 songs with
us, while fellow locals, The Horror, came in and had us mix their
upcoming full-length CD.
With this being a great way to end the year, we're really excited to see
what 2008 will have in store for us. Thanks for reading and have a good
year!

Hey Glypher, Mods,
Some of the folks at Wayward were hoping to get their venue description updated. I agreed to post it for them, so here it is.
--
Wayward Council is a Not-for-Profit Volunteer- and Collectively-run Record Store, All Ages Show Space, and often a Community Space for people to hang out in. We are located at 807 West University Avenue in Gainesville, right next to Recycled Bicycles on the corner of 8th St. and University Avenue. If you need directions or more info, please call us at (352) 335-0800. The hours for the store are Monday through Saturday 12-8 and Sunday 12-6. And in addition to selling records, we have books, zines, cds, art, and more. We also take cd/record requests for music you want to buy during our regular store hours. If you're interested in becoming involved in the space as a volunteer, please come to the Volunteer meetings every Sunday at 6 pm. As a volunteer at Wayward, you can book shows at the space, have band practice at the space, and even work a shift, running the store!
As a show space, we book shows based on volunteer interest since the shows are always booked, promoted, run, and cleaned up by volunteers. If you're in a band and want to play at Wayward, your best chance of playing would be to come to a volunteer meeting and talk to volunteers about yourself and your music, and then suggest a day on which you'd like to play. If you'd prefer a more passive approach, you can bring in a demo of your music during store hours and leave a note with your contact information and preferred day for playing. If you're reading this from afar, you can send in a demo and a brief description of your band to the store at 807 West University Avenue Gainesville, FL 32601.
We do more than music! We also host art shows, movie screenings, club/group meetings, puppet shows, plays, book/zine readings and are open to new events that you might have an idea for. We are usually able to accomadate any creative venture you are willing to display, so please come to us with ideas because we are always trying to diversify our space to make our community better and more accessible. Contact us at (352) 335-0800 with your ideas.
Concerning Shows: We prefer to book shows 1-4 weeks in advance due to fluctuation in volunteer involvement, so if we seem kind of indifferent towards a show that you want to book 3 months in advance this is why. All shows start after 10 PM as a courtesy to our neighbors on the block, and must end by 2 am as a courtesy to our working volunteers who have to clean up and close the store after the show. When local bands play shows at the space, the show is considered a benefit show for Wayward, so any money collected at the door goes directly to paying rent, buying more records for the store, fixing the store up, etc...no one gets paid. If you are a touring act, the space will give roughly 80% of the door to you. For example: You are in a touring band playing at Wayward, and the promoter is charging $5 at the door and 20 people show up and they all pay $5. So the show made $100, meaning you as the touring band will get $80 and the store will keep $20 for electricity, bills, etc. The capacity of the store is about 80 people, comfortably. We have a working PA, mics and mic stands, and can generally accomadate all you rock bands out there.
Stop by and say Hey Doggie!

Glypher, can you possibly make the "Bands and Venue" field on the Upcoming Shows "Post New Topic" page longer? Right now it only allows 35 characters...
Maybe a few more? I know there's a space constraint within the columns, but even 40-45 characters would make a difference when entering all of the info.
Or... have a pull-down menu for the venue selection.
Thanks,

I noticed that this venue wasn't in the database (shows happen here occasionally):
WARPhaus Gallery
818 NW 1st Ave.
WARPhaus Gallery is an off-campus gallery space for UF faculty, staff and students. It's a facility owned and operated by UF's School of Art & Art History, and is located behind Hear Again CDs/DVDs in it's own free-standing warehouse space.
A description from this page reads:
| Quote: | The
WARPhaus Gallery is in a renovated grey warehouse located at 818 N.W.
1st avenue in Gainesville, Fla. The gallery entrance is on the east
side of the building. Visitor parking is available in spaces marked for
the “WARPhaus.”
For more information, contact Rodrigo Negreira, WARPhaus Gallery Coordinator, at RMNegreira@yahoo.com
|
Another description, from this page reads:
| Quote: | | The
School of Art and Art History’s Workshop for Art Research and Practice
(WARP) is housed in WARPhaus, a 6,000-square-foot renovated warehouse
on West University Avenue, within walking distance of the College of
Fine Arts complex. This facility provides additional space for
classrooms, gallery space for students, and faculty offices. |

George's Meet & Produce (RIP) is now the new Civic Media Center as of last week. You'll want to change the CMC's listing info (address, etc.) in the database. GMaP is no more.

We would really appreciate it if we could get the Music
Law Conference as a news post. Here is our press
release. Thanks!
UF Music Law Conference: Serves entertainment and legal
professions
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — One wouldn't immediately think of
musicians and lawyers as having much in common. However,
when it comes to navigating a course through the high-
stakes terrain of the music industry, two professional
heads are definitely better than one.
Finding common ground between music and the law is the
goal of "From the Suits to the Stage," the University of
Florida Levin College of Law's Seventh Annual Music Law
Conference, to be held Feb. 20 – 21. Attorneys,
musicians, band managers and anyone interested or
involved in the music industry should make plans to
attend the event, which will feature live performances
from local bands on Feb. 20, and an educational
conference on Feb. 21.
Keynote speaker Martin Atkins, an author and record
label owner who has toured with Public Image Ltd.,
Killing Joke, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, said he is
looking forward to the exchange of ideas he anticipates
will happen at the conference.
"It's been my experience that ideas circulated amongst
any group of interested people create more ideas," said
Atkins. "I like the games of mental ping-pong that
happen with any gathering of switched-on, open-brained
people."
The Feb. 20 band showcase offers an exciting slate of
live performances by young, up-and-coming, local bands —
including Bang Bang Boom, The Duppies, SuperFish, and
Vernon — from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Common Grounds,
located at 210 S.W. 2nd Ave. in downtown Gainesville.
Conference sessions will begin at 9 a.m. on Feb. 21 in
the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (180) on the
UF College of Law campus. Legal and music-industry
experts will discuss topics ranging from licensing and
copyrights to management and musician's rights. A new
addition, the Breakout Session, will give the attendees
a chance to get into small groups with one of the
panelists for either a Q&A or a workshop. Notable
confirmed panelists include Gary Roth, assistant vice
president of Legal Affairs for BMI records, and Ravi, a
musician and advocate for artistic integrity.
The conference is free to UF faculty and students.
Registration for non-UF students and faculty is $20.
Registration for attorneys is $75, which includes seven
Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.
"Last year's Sixth Annual Music Law Conference explored
new forms of music distribution, commercial markets, and
the ethical issues faced by attorneys trying to protect
the fruits of musicians' creative endeavors," said Kevin
E. Leary, a 1986 graduate of UF Law, member of the
Entertainment & Sports Law and Business Law sections of
The Florida Bar, and panelist at last year's conference.
"I firmly believe that this year's Music Law Conference
will again be a valuable experience for attorneys, law
students, and musicians seeking to successfully navigate
the often murky waters of the music business."
Sondra Randon, third-year law student and executive
director of the music conference, said the conference
was developed to bring musicians, lawyers and business
professionals together to discuss current trends and
issues in the music industry.
"The theme of this year's conference is actually two-
fold," said Randon. "On one hand, the conference is
geared towards helping and educating the musician
through every step of the process. On the other hand, it
is aimed at professional and to-be professionals to help
them create new ideas, learn and discuss the most
current issues and to network with other members of the
industry."

www.law.ufl.edu/musiclawconf/registration.shtml.
