Hey all - some cable questions.

What do you need?  What brands do you like?  What lengths are popular?  Trying to decide what to get so we can make sure this side of town is covered in the cable department.

Thanks.  I appreciate the feedback.

no one on this side of town knows what an XLR is.

Radio Shack on Main replied with "is that for music?"

Also, i don't know brands much, but cables that dont cost MonsterCable prices, but dont quit working the first time i hook things up. I thought radio shack was the place for audio cables, but apparently they are the place for cell phones these days. I watched the guy re-package the cable i just returned cus it wasnt working & he put it back on the shelf. wtf?

pretty much if you know what you are talking about then you'll be refreshing for the East-ish side of Gainesville.

Well know about this stuff - just want to know what brands you all like.  For the most part - some people swear by fender stuff while others say it breaks all the time.  I've had both good and bad experiences with fender but about the same experiences with other brands as well.  You can look at national studies on stuff but we are particularly interested in what people HERE want.  Not what some dude in LA thinks people want.  We don't live in LA so we don't want to taylor to an LA market/mentality.

yeh, i thought you guys might know a little something, lol...

like i said, i dont know much about the brands cus it seems every brand i get that isnt 40 bucks for a short RCA winds up not working soon after i get them. Shree swears its me. Might be i dunno. Regardless, knowledgeable music peoples will minimize the frustration of the constant cord replacement cycle. Thanks again guys...

monster cable sells snake oil... it's pointless to spend that kind of money on cables. many other companies offer lifetime warranties if that's your main reason for buying them...

you could buy raw cable [mogami], heatshrink, and neutrik connectors. solder them yourself. make up a huge batch and sell them at the shop. that way you could make xlr, 1/4" TS, TRS with the same cable spool.  order bulk somewhere like markertek. 1.99 per connector, .50 cents per foot of mogami cable. a 1.5 foot cable like this will cost you 15-20 bucks from any store premade...

planet waves stuff is good. hosa is passable, and cheap. i've ahd dimarzio cables that lasted 12 years of abuse, and dimarzio that crapped out after 3 months. the only thing i don't like in cables is molded connectors. no way to get inside and fix them. most instrument cables like fender, dimarzio, etc are made the same way. switchcraft jacks, shielded cable. it comes down to the solder joints being strong enough, and abuse...

15' is a good cable length. 25' is quite useful. i suspect 6"-1' patch cables for guitar/bass players.
