I'm hoping some of you can give me tips on soundproofing.  I want to use a room in a concrete house for practicing drums.

I was thinking of covering the 1 window with a mattress, and also using bedding foam and carpet on the rest of the walls.  Anyone know of anything else that might work better?

Every room is different, man. Is there carpet on the floor? You playing with a band, or is it just a drums? Is it for recording, or just practice?

I would focus on all the spots that people who would complain about noise can hear, neighbor(s), roommate(s), etc.

That window will be hard to deal with (single pane plate glass?). You planning on be able to use it? If not, I would put some foam (egg crate or packing foam) over it, then cover the entire area with a piece of free scrap plywood, or a big piece of foam/thick blanket, then the mattress. Honestly, mattresses don't do much.

A friend of mine build ~8' wooden bass traps that dampen sound. They look like wooden monoliths from Space Odyssey.

I used furniture blankets on concrete walls, and that seems to help better than egg crate foam, but it gets hot, man. Real hot.

sound proofing is really about density... I'm not talking about accoustics but just talking about keeping sound from leaking through the walls and windows of a space... we took some MDF and mounted it too our exterior room walls and covered it with industrial carpet padding.  Worked great.  Not 100% but it works great.  This is kind of an expensive route without going "pro" but it works and you can get it all locally at lowes or home depot....

Usually it's cheaper just to muffl the drums to death and turn down your instruments.

Honestly, if you're looking to do any sort of soundproofing you should confer with the Risk Reduction Bureau

334-5065

Otherwise, if you have a noise complaint you could get fined for fire code violations.

do not put egg crates or carpet up, they do NOTHING for sound transmission and are a fire hazard.  Acoustical panels are for dampening the room sound for recording and do NOTHING for sound transmission.  I suggest doing a search on GOOGLE not on GVBDC.  The basic idea is to build a room within a room.  Floating floor, rockwool in the walls, etc.  You need an AIR TIGHT room.  Most of this will be overkill for a practice room.  I suggest you just set up and play and walk outside and see how bad it is.  I play at my house in the northwest and nobody has complained in 5 years, because we stop at 9pm.
