I was recently looking at Make magazine site and saw they had a couple of instructions on projects to build your own.
And I have seen Hal McGee accompany a slide guitar on one.

I would say try and get one with both the loop antenna (on the left - volume) and an upright antenna (pitch). A lot of the less expensive models only come with the upright antenna.

I looked at building one, but the costs seem the same as buying one already built - the lower end models at least - as in I can buy one of the same quality as I can build one. Thanks for the link though, it would be great if i could find one to mess with prior to making the investment.
I will also keep the antenna layout in mind.
I know there was a surf or psychobillly type band in town a while back who used one, but can't remember their name.... maybe sultans of sin(?)
